After a bibliographic research of the rights concerning the people of the Greek
LGBTQI+ community and their comparison to those in other European countries, the purpose
of this thesis is to investigate the exercise of rights concerning family and work relationships in
Greece and abroad, using quantitative research, with questionnaires filled by people in the
LGBTQI+ community traced in organizations or online communities. The sample consists of
78 people from the LGBTQI+ community, more specific 43 people from Greece and 35 from
abroad. Specifically, in the quantitative research, besides a descriptive analysis of the data and
a comparison between Greek questionnaires and those from abroad, the factors examined was
the correlation between the legal framework of each country with the fundamental right of
LGBTQI+ people in family and work, whether they are treated differently depending if they
have “come out” in their workplace or not, and in what degree LGBTQI+ individuals address
to social workers for defense and information about their rights.
According to the results the legal framework of each country is relating to the right of
the individual to a different sex life, people of the LGBTQI+ community who have come out
in the workplace do not face discrimination, as opposed to those who haven’t because they are
afraid and that people from the LGBTQI community don’t usually turn to social workers for
help.
Furthermore, from qualitative research carried out by interviewing professionals social
workers, who worked or have worked in the past in organizations that support LGBTQI+
individuals, the purpose was to explore in what degree they are familiar with the law
surrounding LGBTQI+ rights, as well as their work to protect and defend the rights and
prosperity of the community. There have been 5 interviews in total that have been recorded and
analyzed.
According to the finds of our interviews the interviewees attest that the academic
education provided is not sufficient and optimal for handling LGBTQI cases. It was also
observed that there are not exclusive LGBTQI+ infrastructures powered by social workers and
when social workers service people of the community it is usually in other identities.
