Μελέτη και υλοποίηση της διαδικασίας του remix όπως αυτή προκύπτει μεταξύ διαφορετικών μουσικών οργάνων.

Abstract

Σκοπός της παρούσας πτυχιακής εργασίας είναι η έρευνα και η υλοποίηση της διαδικασίας του Remix. Η εν λόγω διαδικασία εξ’ ορισμού προϋποθέτει εν ολίγοις την επιλογή, ηχογράφηση και μίξη διαφόρων κομματιών (στο εξής «πρωτοτύπων») με σκοπό την ακόλουθη μεταφορά τους σε κάποιο είδος ηλεκτρονικής μουσικής. Συνεπώς ένα μικρό μέρος της έρευνας περιλαμβάνει την παράθεση κάποιων τεχνικών στοιχείων των μεθόδων ηχογράφησης και μίξης της περιόδου κυκλοφορίας των πρωτοτύπων κομματιών. Ωστόσο, καθότι η εργασία επικεντρώνεται σε αυτήν καθαυτή την μεταφορά των κομματιών σε κάποιο ηλεκτρονικό μουσικό ρεύμα, το ερευνητικό μέρος σκόπιμα εστιάζει στον προσδιορισμό όλων των στοιχείων και των παραγόντων που χαρακτηρίζουν το εκάστοτε αυτό μουσικό ρεύμα. Φυσικά τα στοιχεία αυτά ακολούθως αποτελούν γνώμονα για το πρακτικό μέρος της εργασίας (υλοποίηση των remixes). Το πρώτο στάδιο του πρακτικού μέρους περιλαμβάνει την επιλογή κατάλληλων κομματιών και καλλιτεχνών, βάσει των κριτηρίων του εκάστοτε μουσικού ρεύματος που παρατίθενται στην έρευνα, ώστε να είναι εφικτή η μεταφορά κατά το remix. Επισημαίνεται ότι ηχογραφήθηκαν τέσσερα τραγούδια, ενώ χρησιμοποιήθηκαν και δύο προηχογραφημένα γνωστών καλλιτεχνών (Bob Marley, Metallica) σε πολυκάναλη μορφή. Ακολούθησε η ηχογράφηση και η μίξη των τεσσάρων, καθώς και η μίξη των δύο προηχογραφημένων κομματιών. Το τελευταίο και μεγαλύτερης βαρύτητας στάδιο του πρακτικού μέρους περιλαμβάνει την εκτενή ανάλυση της υλοποίησης των Remix εκδοχών των κομματιών αυτών. Η ανάλυση αυτή ξεκινά με την παράθεση των κριτηρίων επιλογής του εκάστοτε κομματιού για τη μεταφορά στο αντίστοιχο επιλεχθέν μουσικό είδος. Ακολούθως γίνεται μία λεπτομερής παράθεση του τρόπου υλοποίησης του εκάστοτε remix από μουσικολογικής, τεχνικής και μορφολογικής σκοπιάς, φυσικά σε συμφωνία με τα στοιχεία της έρευνας. Εν κατακλείδι, παρατίθενται τα συμπεράσματα της έρευνας τα οποία περιλαμβάνουν πορίσματα απορρέοντα από τη σύγκριση των διαφόρων μουσικών ρευμάτων των remixes καθώς και από τη σύγκριση μεθόδων υλοποίησης διαφόρων τεχνικών. Επίσης τα συμπεράσματα πλαισιώνονται από την ανάλυση θεμάτων που προκύπτουν από την ίδια τη διαδικασία του remix καθώς και μία συνοπτική αξιολόγηση της συνολικής διαδικασίας της παρούσας εργασίας. Επιπροσθέτως η εργασία περιλαμβάνει τρία παραρτήματα. Το πρώτο αφορά την υλοποίηση ενός Drum Synth Patch στο περιβάλλον της Max/Msp, ενώ το δεύτερο αποτελείται από μία παράθεση του εξοπλισμού που χρησιμοποιήθηκε κατά την εκπόνηση της εργασίας. Το τρίτο παράρτημα αποτελείται από τα tracklists των δύο cds που συνοδεύουν την εργασία, όπου το ένα περιέχει τις μίξεις των πρωτοτύπων και τα αντίστοιχα remixes, ενώ το δεύτερο αποτελείται από ηχητικά παραδείγματα υλοποίησης διαφόρων τεχνικών ανά περίπτωση).

The purpose of this thesis is the research and implementation process of remix. This process presupposes the selection, sound recording and mixing of various tracks (hereafter “original tracks”) in order to be transferred to an electronic music genre. Consequently, a small part of the research includes the apposition of some technical elements of sound recording and mixing methods, which where commonly used during the circulation period of the original tracks. However, since the thesis focuses on the actual transfer of these tracks to be subsumed into an electronic music genre, the research part intentionally focuses on the determination of all elements and factors, which characterize each music genre. Certainly, these elements are afterwards used as the constituting basis for the practical part of the thesis (implementation of remixes). The first stage of the practical part includes the selection of appropriate tracks and artists, which meet the criteria, of each music genre, that are listed in the research part, in order to make this transfer facile during the remix process. It is noted that four songs were recorded, while two pre-recorded songs of famous artists (Bob Marley, Metallica) were used in multitrack form. In the first place the recording of the four tracks occurred, while the mixing process of these four tracks as well as of the two pre-recorded followed. The last and the most important stage of the practical part, includes extensive analysis of the implementation of remix versions of these tracks. This analysis begins with the apposition of the selection criteria of each track regarding the transferring process to the corresponding selected genre. Subsequently, an apposition of the implementation method of the remix version follows, regarding musicological, technical and morphological issues, according to the indications of the research part. Finally, the conclusions of this thesis are listed. These consist of research results derived from the comparison of various music genres of the remixes, as well as the comparison of the implementation method of various used techniques. Also, the conclusions are framed from the analysis of issues arising from the process of the remix, as well as a concise assessment of the overall process of the present thesis. Additionally, the thesis includes three appendices. The first concerns the implementation of a drum synth patch within the Max/Msp programming environment, while the second consists of the apposition of the equipment used. The third appendix consists of the track lists of the two cds which accompany this thesis, where the first contains the mixes of the original tracks as well as the corresponding remixes, while the second consists of sound examples derived from the implementation of various techniques used per case.
