Μελέτη προτύπων υποκειμενικής και αντικειμενικής αξιολόγησης της ποιότητας του ήχου.

Abstract

Σκοπός αυτής της εργασίας είναι η μελέτη των προτύπων που έχουν δημιουργηθεί για την υποκειμενική και αντικειμενική αξιολόγηση της ποιότητας του ήχου. Πιο συγκεκριμένα, θα αναλυθούν οι μέθοδοι που αφορούν την αξιολόγηση ηχητικών δεδομένων που έχουν υποστεί κωδικοποίηση (συμπίεση). Η εργασία αρχικά παρουσιάζει τον τρόπο αξιολόγησης της ηχητικής ποιότητας, ο οποίος είναι κοινός για όλες τις προσεγγίσεις, δηλαδή, για όλα τα πρότυπα αξιολόγησης της ηχητικής ποιότητας. Τα πρότυπα αυτά περιλαμβάνουν τη διεξαγωγή ψυχοακουστικών τεστ αλλά και τη χρήση ειδικά σχεδιασμένων εργαλείων με τη μορφή προγραμμάτων λογισμικού. Εν συνεχεία, παρουσιάζονται τα πρότυπα τα οποία μελετώνται στα πλαίσια της υποκειμενικής αξιολόγησης και έχουν αναπτυχθεί από το Διεθνή Οργανισμό Τηλεπικοινωνιών ITU (International Telecommunication Union). Τα πρότυπα αυτά είναι τα ακόλουθα: • Broadcasting Service 1116: Methods for the subjective assessment of small impairments in audio systems including multichannel sound systems. • Broadcasting Service 1284: General methods for the subjective assessment of sound quality. • Broadcasting Service 1285: Pre-selection methods for the subjective assessment of small impairments in audio systems. • Broadcasting Service 1534: Method for the subjective assessment of intermediate quality levels of coding systems. Αναφορικά με την αντικειμενική αξιολόγηση η εργασία εξετάζει το πρότυπο του ITU, Broadcasting Service 1387: Method for objective measurements of perceived audio quality. Καθώς η αντικειμενική αξιολόγηση ηχητικής ποιότητας δεν είναι ευρέως αποδεκτή πρακτική και ειδικότερα σε μουσικό σήμα, η εργασία εστιάζει κυρίως στην υποκειμενική/πειραματική αξιολόγηση, ενώ η προσέγγιση που ακολουθείται στην αντικειμενική αξιολόγηση παρουσιάζεται συνοπτικά αναλύοντας τα πλεονεκτήματα και τα μειονεκτήματα της, έναντι της υποκειμενικής. Η μελέτη αυτή έχει ως στόχο να καταδείξει το βαθμό αλλοίωσης της ποιότητας του ήχου από τους σύγχρονους αλγόριθμους συμπίεσης, καθώς επίσης και το πώς μια τέτοια επεξεργασία ηχητικών δεδομένων επηρεάζει την ακουστική αντίληψη του ανθρώπου.

This final project thesis aims at investigating established methodologies and technical standards for the subjective and objective assessment of audio quality. Initially, the thesis presents the general practices being adopted in designing experiments of sound quality assessment. These practices are primarily concerned with aspects such as selecting the appropriate sound sources, human subjects, space and sound rendering equipment and statistical processing of results. In general, audio quality assessments methodologies are either subjective or objective. These methods involve experimental research on psychoacoustics (subjective part), as well as the use of software tools that have been developed especially for the objective part of audio assessment. The thesis focuses on the following International Telecommunications Union (ITU) standards for audio quality assessment: • Broadcasting Service 1116-1: Methods for the subjective assessment of small impairments in audio systems including multichannel sound systems. • Broadcasting Service 1284: General methods for the subjective assessment of sound quality. • Broadcasting Service 1285: Pre-selection methods for the subjective assessment of small impairments in audio systems. • Broadcasting Service 1534: Method for the subjective assessment of intermediate quality levels of coding systems. Concerning the objective assessment of audio quality the thesis discusses the ITU Broadcasting Service 1387: Method for objective measurements of perceived audio quality. As objective assessment is not (at least not yet), a widely acceptable practice for evaluating encoded audio data, this work focuses on the analysis of subjective evaluation models and briefly outlines the advantages and disadvantages of objective vs. subjective assessment of audio quality Ultimately, this study aims at demonstrating the degree of deterioration of sound quality by modern compression algorithms as well as how these algorithms affect musical perception in humans.
