This master thesis aims to assess the impact of rotating masses like induction motors and flywheels in the frequency deviations of the electric grid. Initially, the structure and operation of a Power System, the stability, and disturbances of such a system are described, focusing on frequency disturbances observed at the Power System of Crete. Then some of the pumping units of the island are presented and then the purpose and structure of this dissertation. Then, the basic principles of induction motors, the structure, the control, and the types of loads that an electrical network may include are analyzed. Next, an extensive description of the FESS systems is given, including the main components, their principle of operation, the flywheel types, and the advantages - disadvantages compared to other energy storage systems, their applications in existing electrical networks, and finally the modeling of two different flywheel systems. Afterwards, simulations were undertaken in Simulink to study the behavior of induction motors depending on the frequency of the electric grid, and then the results of these experiments are presented, on how frequency affects the operation of electric motors depending on the type of mechanical load and the controller used. Later, the mathematical model of FESS used is described, the algorithm of calculations of some important variables for the flywheel model BP-400 used and the scenarios studied for the participation of the rotating flywheels in the underfrequency disruptions of the EPS of Crete. Then, the mathematical model of the FESS used is described, as well as the algorithm of calculations of some important variables for the model BP-400 Modular used. Later, the scenarios developed for the participation of the rotating flywheels in the Power System of Crete are presented, in order to restore the frequency of the grid to the nominal levels. Finally, the conclusions of the dissertation are analyzed, as well as future proposals that would be useful to implement.en
