Released 2019, IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, v.26.0, Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.).
Introduction Health literacy is based on general literacy which includes the knowledge, skills and willingness of the individuals to comprehend, evaluate and implement information on health issues, judge and make decisions on matters regarding health care, prevention on diseases and health promotion, to maintain and improve their quality of life, regardless of age. It is directly associated with the health status of the patients as well as their ability to properly deal with their health problems. On the contrary, limited health literacy is related to the inefficient management of their health by the individual, inability to access several healthcare services, difficulty in understanding information related to their health as well as in making decisions which would be appropriate to succour the patient’s health improvement. Aim This dissertation aims in investigating the degree of health literacy of patients that are hospitalised in surgical departments of a university hospital. Material and Method The hereinto dissertation adopted the designing of contemporary descriptive study with partial correlations. The sample of the study consists of 120 patients of the surgical department of a general university hospital of the district. For the data collection we used the brief modified Greek version of reasoned European Scale of health literacy (European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire 16, HLS-EU-Q16). The data analysis for this project was conducted with the use of SPSS (IBM Corp. Released 2019, IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, v.26.0, Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.) Frequency distributions of the descriptive characteristics, of work characteristics, employment or health status and quality of life of the participants in the study, were evaluated. The comparison of the frequency distributions was carried out with the estimation of the 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) while x2 distribution homogeneity control was applied on the graded responses that regarded the Health Literacy Scale. The accepted level of significance set was p-value ≤ 0,05. Results The grading of Health Literacy Scale and its subscales were found at high levels or very good degree of literacy. Approximately 3 out of 4 participants (75,8%) were found with sufficient literacy, while 5,0% were found with insufficient literacy. Married or cohabitating, operated patients, appertain to the processing and use of information by the Doctor and the Perception of Danger of habits of those who have high levels of education with the Dealing of Factors of Danger for Health, those who do not suffer from any disease with Seeking for Information on Health Issues and Symptoms (p<0,05). Overall, it is determined that Health Literacy is not significantly related to the special attributes of the participants in the study (p>0,05). Conclusions Health literacy is found at high levels in surgical patients. Health Literacy is not significantly related to the special attributes of the participants in the study. What is vital for the preservation and enhancement of the health literacy of the patient is the development of websites and digital health tools with information adapted to the patents’ needs and development of education techniques and consultation for the patients for the amplification of their literacy level. Additionally, further prospective studies on big representative sample are required in order for the determination of the effects of illiteracy on health issued and post-surgery outcomes.en
