Leprosy or Hansen's disease had a long-standing presence in Crete from Biblical times until the middle of the 20th century. Due to its geographical location, Crete has always been vulnerable to infectious diseases, with leprosy being the main focus throughout Greece. It was considered a divine disease and punishment until the discovery of mycobacteria of leprosy in 1873 by Gerhard Armauer Hansen. The expulsion of the leper during medieval times was also a funeral, as a funeral sequence was chanted alive. Its presence in Crete since the Venetian era was constant and in all four prefectures and on Ottoman rule a systematic policy against the lepers began with various decrees aimed at not curing but the isolation of lepers from healthy residents outside the walls cities to avoid contamination. In the island the lepers were called "kinidis" and the villages that were leprosy or meshinis. In Chania the lepers stayed in the leprochori that was to the west of the city in the area of Varoussi, in Rethymno in the area of the Holy Cross, in Heraklion in the area of Chrysopigi and Lasithi in Ierapetra in the village of Petrokefali. The looseness of isolation, the dealings with the inhabitants and the fleet chartering on the island as well as the development of the settlement forced the newly established state of the Cretan State to take measures of isolation and isolation, and in 1904 all the lepers were transferred to enclave on the island of Spinalonga. The Spinalonga leopard was originally a place of encapsulation with no cure, while leopard living conditions were characterized as tragic. Various decrees defined its internal organization and the staff it would serve. After 1945 and the discovery of sulphones, the condition began to change and provided care and medication, while the administration of dapsone gradually led to the healing of all lepers and their transfer to the Athens Anti-Alexis Station. Removing them from the islet in 1957 led to the closure of Spinalonga. The social stigma created by leprous disease was so great that patients were deleted from birth registers and considered dead, families that had letharly changed their place of residence, lepers were separated from their parents, etc.en
