Triggering.
The present thesis studies Augmented Reality under the prism of sonic content; apesifically,
of impact sounds. We define sound augmentation as the result of mixing a natural impact sound
with a synthetic one or with an edited version of the natural sound itself. This task results in
a new sound with enhanced specrtal properties, which however conservates lots of the
sonic characteristics of the natural object.
For the purpose of this analysis, natural sounds were produced by the
excitation of everyday objects of different sizes and materials. Electronic sounds were produced
by using additive and subtractive synthesis techniques, while the approach of superimposing an exemplary
version of the natural sound itself was also examined. The synthetic sounds were synchronized
with natural ones using the technique known as Gate Triggering. The resulting augmented sounds were
utilized to construct an online listening test. Results from more than 50 listeners were analyzed
in order to evaluate the techniques and assess their acceptance by the public.
