The present dissertation entitled "Acoustic study of lyre with sympathetic strings" aims to highlight the effect of sympathetic strings on the acoustic behavior of the lyre. The lyre with sympathetic strings is a combination of three musical instruments which are the Cretan lyre, the Political lyre and the Indian Sarangi. It was designed by Mr. Ross Daly in 1990 and the result is a lyre with 3 playing basic strings as in the Cretan and Political lyre and with 18 sympathetic strings (and above), which are tuned pulsating on small riders. The study of the effect of the sympathetic chords is done by recording and studying its spectral acoustic characteristics. The acoustic study consists in the stimulation of the instrument by sounding (with sweep tones) and in the recording and study of the frequency behavior of the instrument as a whole, of the lid, the back, as well as the recording of the air and wood frequency of the instrument. The measurements of the acoustic study are performed with and without the sympathetic strings (isolation of sympathetic strings so that they do not pulsate) in order to make a comparison between them in order to reach conclusions. In addition, the quality factor Q is calculated using the spectra for specific frequencies and a comparison is made between the lyre with active sympathetic strings and the same lyre with inactive sympathetic strings. The study took place at the Musical Acoustics laboratories, at the recording studio and in the Audient control room of the Department of Music Technology & Acoustics of the Hellenic Mediterranean University.en
