The purpose of the present study was to examine the existence of the
difference between boys’ and girls’ socialization within their families. Another aim of
this research was to determine whether the family, as the primary group where people
communicate, reproduces the social perception and stereotypes of gender-related
roles. To examine the accuracy of these assumptions, the participants were asked to
recall their childhood memories, using as an example their own families.
The sample, which was collected randomly, consisted of 257 young adults at
the age of 18 to 30 years old. The method of quantitative research was chosen, with
the use of an online questionnaire consisted of open-ended and closed-ended
questions. Data were analyzed with the SPSS Statistical Package.
The results of this study seem to confirm, to a certain extent, the existence of
gender socialization within greek families. Among others, it was examined that
parents had a significant influence on their children’s perceptions of gender roles. It
was also proven that during their childhood the participants have been encouraged to
play with toys that were socially compatible with their gender. Besides, it was
established that the male participants were under more pressure than the female ones
in different fields.
This study showed the existence of gender socialization since the way that
male and female participants were socialized appeared to be different. Family is
indeed the first place where socialization begins, reproducing some social stereotypes.
